CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS

The foundation for this research study is grounded in four main bodies of literature. The bodies of literature include theories on literacy, theories regarding multimedia, knowledge acquisition theories and theories regarding the learning of mathematical concepts. These bodies of literature are reviewed in detail because they all influence the effective use of network projects for learning and the use of digital video. The first section is devoted to a discussion of visual literacy. The second section illustrates ideas surrounding the use of multimedia and hypermedia in the K-12 classroom. The third section discusses knowledge acquisition theories highlighting schema theory and cognitive flexibility theory. The fourth section discusses issues related to knowledge acquisition as it applies to the learning of mathematical concepts. This section concludes with an overview of digital video technology.
